Port takes its name from the city of Oporto that is situated at the mouth of the 560-mile long Rio Douro or River of Gold. Although many port-style wines are made around the world – most notably Australia, South Africa and the United States, a true port must be from Portugal. Our Portage is a port-style wine, crafted from Portteus Vineyard Petite Sirah and island distilled brandy.
We use only the best, so for our Portage we had our own Rattlesnake red wines distilled for us by the Seattle Distilling Company into an 80 proof brandy. We then aged the brandy in oak barrels,, then added it in primary fermentation to the Petite Sirah, halting the fermentation and boosting alcohol.
This stunning port style wine is a thing of beauty – rich, round, and silky with giant fruit flavors and a clean wine finish. Paired with dark chocolate, it’s incomparable. Also delicious with rich meats, cheese plates, or romance.
