April 2008, Seattle Wine Blogger 2008 Picks "Best New Puget Sound Winery" - Palouse

___________

April 7th, 2008 - Gene Stein on the Taste of Washington 2008 -
"My first stop after a sip of Quilceda Creek Red was Palouse Winery. George and Linda were pouring at their first ever Taste Washington and as usual the pours were spectacular. The semi-sweet 2007 Riesling was "full flavored." The 2007 Viognier was exceptionally aromatic. The 2005 "Dineen" Cab Sauv was "awesome." The 2004 Eclipse eclipsed everything else except the Cab and the Syrah."

Dec. 21st, 2007 Fifteen Best Washington State Winemakers I

t's that time of year again - time for "bests" or "faves" of the year. Try as hard as could, I just couldn't get this list of best winemakers down to the "Ten Best" and limiting it to fifteen still leaves out lots of great winemakers here in Washington state, so here goes in no particular order:

1) John Bell - Willis Hall, 2) Trey Busch - Sleight of Hand, 3) Brian Carter - Brian Carter and Apex, 4) Scott Greer - Sheridan Vineyards, 5) Don Corson - Camaraderie, 6) Brett Isenhauer - Isenhauer, 7) Mike Januik - Januik and Novelty Hill,
8) Gearge Kirkish - Palouse, 9) Serge Laville - Spring Valley, 10) Ned Moriis - Amaurice, 11) Jean Francois Pellet - Pepper Bridge, 12) Tim Narby - Note Bene, 13) Tim Sorenson - Fall Line, 14) Ben Smith - Cadence, 15) Chris Upchurch - DeLille

Jan 17, 2007 Ten Best New Washington Wineries

2) Palouse Winery - George Kirkish burst upon the scene with an excellent blend called Eclipse and a Petit Sirah called Black Pearl which may be the best Petit Sirah I've tasted.

Hi Alder. One of the best Petit Sirah's I've ever tasted was made by a new winery in Washington - Palouse Winery on Vashon Island. "Black Pearl" made by George Kirkish was deep, rich black and loaded with black plum flavors. Unfortunately, and not surprisingly, it is sold out. Gene

May 27th, 2007 Paul Gregget has tasted.

"We moved on down the road and met George and Linda Kirkish, whose Palouse Winery occupies a small shed adjacent to their home. All roads intertwine on Vashon; their early winemaking was done under the tutelage of Vashon Winery's original owner.

The winery is named for a street in Walla Walla as well as the great rolling wheatlands of Eastern Washington, and the grapes come from several Yakima Valley vineyards, including Portteus, Dineen and Meek. Production started at just a few barrels and has more or less topped out at 1,000 cases. "It's all we can fit," says George, staring at what once was a perfectly serviceable garage."

Their "pocket winery," as they refer to it, does well with both whites and reds — a barrel-fermented viognier; a ripe, round riesling; and soft, dark and tannic reds made from blends of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and petite sirah.  From the barrel we tasted an excellent 2005 Dineen Syrah and a cherry-scented 2006 Meek Merlot.
