Port takes its name from the city of Oporto that is situated at the mouth of the 560-mile long Rio Douro, which translates into “River of Gold”. Although many port-style wines are made around the world – most notably Australia, South Africa, and the United States – a true port must be from Portugal.
For the Portage, we have our own Rattlesnake Hills red wines distilled into an 80 proof brandy by the island-based Seattle Distilling Co. We add that brandy during the peak of primary fermentation to Portteus Vineyard-sourced Petite Sirah, halting the fermentation and boosting the alcohol content to 18.2. Our oak philosophy applies as usual – two thirds neutral French oak, one third new French oak.
The final product after two years of aging in oak barrels is this stunning port-style wine, a thing of beauty – rich, round, and silky with giant fruit flavors and a clean wine finish. Whether one is a port drinker or not, this is always a hit. Paired with dark chocolate, it’s incomparable. Also delicious with rich meats, cheese plates, or fireside cigars.
